Solstice: A New Reward Mechanism for the Filecoin Network

Oct 19, 2026

With Solstice, Filecoin begins an important transition: from building storage capacity to helping businesses turn that capacity into services customers choose to pay for. The network has established a global foundation of independent storage providers. Now, the change will drive a growing share of block rewards to services that bring paying customers onto the network.

Why the World Needs an Open Storage Marketplace

AI training, enterprise applications, archives, backups and other data-heavy products are making dependable storage increasingly important. Yet much of the world's cloud infrastructure is concentrated among a few companies. The Filecoin network offers a different model: an open network where independent providers can supply infrastructure and multiple businesses can build differentiated products.

Those businesses built on Filecoin do not need to sell the same thing. One may specialize in AI datasets, another in long-term archives, and another in enterprise backups. They can compete on reliability, performance, customer service, and price. Customers should have a familiar experience with buying and using a dependable service without needing to learn blockchain mechanics.

But capacity alone cannot create that marketplace. The network must be worthwhile to build products, attract paying customers, and keep serving them. Solstice changes the network's incentives to make room for that next stage.

Why Solstice Changes the Incentive Model

Solstice changes the economics because the network's next challenge is different from its first. The early priority was establishing capacity and a dependable base of storage providers. Now the opportunity is converting that foundation into real services with customers who pay because those services solve meaningful problems.

Solstice deprecates Filecoin Plus (Fil+). Every new sector now qualifies for the same 10× reward multiplier Fil+ offered, without needing DataCap or allocator approval. Existing sectors can opt in. A newly created service reward share is tied to demonstrated revenue through Filecoin Pay; when demand gates aren't met, the unallocated portion is burned instead of automatically distributed. This does not guarantee customer demand, but it puts that goal at the center of the network's economics.

That distinction matters for the people building on Filecoin. Providers can focus on dependable infrastructure. The new role of Service Orchestrator can build interfaces, integrations, customer support and specialized offerings. The network needs both sides to work together if it is to compete with conventional cloud services.

For the below diagram, Protocol rules split each block reward across streams, and the service stream’s share grows only as payment volume through Filecoin Pay grows

What Solstice Makes Possible

For storage providers, Solstice creates a changing commercial environment, not a requirement that every provider become a software company. Some will focus on reliable infrastructure; others will work with service operators or build specialized products themselves. Orchestrators can invest in customer acquisition, integrations, and services that help bring paid activity to the network.

For customers, Solstice means storage that works the way they expect: sign up, pay for a service, and store their data, without ever touching a wallet or learning token economics. Behind that simple experience sits a global network of independent providers competing to earn their business. That competition pushes on price and on reliability, and it means a customer’s data never depends on the fortunes of a single company.

Solstice is a starting point. The ecosystem still needs reliable products, useful integrations, paying customers, and responsible execution of the new governance and reward mechanisms. As AI expands the world's dependence on data infrastructure, Filecoin has a chance to show that capable storage services can emerge from a competitive network instead of a handful of dominant providers.

Welcome to Solstice.
